An industry group representing roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) carrier ships has formed an organisation that seeks to monitor and improve the accounting methodology and data regulations for measuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the sector.
The Global Ro-Ro Community (GRC) is a coalition of ro-ro carriers, verifiers, cargo owners and other stakeholders that make up around 80% of the overall car carrier capacity around the world.
It has launched the GRC Council to work on enhancing the accuracy, transparency and comparability of GHG emissions accounting across the vehicle supply chain.
The group will use verified ISO-approved information and the framework of the Global Logistics Emissions Council.
The GRCC will monitor review of the GRC methodology, manage updates to data-handling regulations and ensure transparent decision-making.
ClassNK assigned to create new governance framework
Ship classification society ClassNK was tasked to formulate GRCC’s governance framework and the immediate production of the regulations could be possible with the election of ClassNK’s green certification department Hiroshi Ochi as GRCC vice-chairman.
The council said that the presence of an industry group that will uplift the trust of carriers, vehicle manufacturers and cargo owners in emissions data handling for Scope 3 reporting and decarbonisation strategies under the standards implemented by the International Maritime Organisation and FuelEU Maritime.
The ship classification society will be tasked to present GHG data under the GRC methodology and back up the development of emissions accounting within the primary information provided by the industry.
GRC Council to assist carriers in effective presentation of GHG data
The creation of the GRC Council seeks to help vessels and carrier owners provide efficient environmental performance data that would enable shippers and original equipment manufacturers handle Scope 3 emissions in a precise and orderly manner.
The improvement of world-class emissions accounting measures aims to enhance the transparency of environmental information and promote decarbonisation across the shipping industry.
