“Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” premiered on Netflix on August 27, giving subscribers an in-depth preview of one of the most anticipated game releases in history before it later arrived on Rockstar’s own platforms.

For decades, Rockstar Games has unveiled its biggest reveals on its own terms. This time, it chose Netflix.

According to reports, the partnership wasn’t driven by Netflix pursuing Rockstar. It was Rockstar that approached Netflix about hosting the exclusive first debut.

The move marked an unusual moment for the gaming industry, placing a major video game reveal on a streaming platform traditionally associated with movies and television.

A bigger look at Vice City’s next chapter

Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, the extended presentation offered a deeper look at “Grand Theft Auto VI,” which Rockstar describes as the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series yet.

The preview further explored the story of protagonists Jason and Lucia.

The pair find themselves caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida after what should have been an easy score goes wrong.

Rather than functioning as a traditional trailer, the presentation served as a more detailed showcase of the game ahead of its release.

Why Netflix?

Netflix described the partnership as an opportunity to bring one of entertainment’s biggest upcoming releases to its global audience.

Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s Vice President of Nonfiction Series, said “Grand Theft Auto” reveals have become cultural events in their own right.

He further added that anticipation for “Grand Theft Auto VI” unprecedented.

He noted that Netflix was honored to partner with Rockstar Games for the debut.

The extended look was made available globally to Netflix subscribers and supported multiple subtitle languages.

The countdown continues

While the extended look gave fans more footage to dissect, the wait for the full game is nearly over.

“Grand Theft Auto VI” is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

For Rockstar, the Netflix debut turned a game preview into a global streaming event. And for fans, it offered the most detailed look yet at the next chapter of “Grand Theft Auto.”
