Gaming news: The Witcher 3, Warhammer 40K lead Gamescom 2026 awards

The Witcher 3 and Warhammer

“The Witcher 3” may be more than a decade old, but it is still collecting trophies.

CD Projekt Red and SEGA emerged as the biggest winners at the Gamescom Awards 2026, taking home three awards each as the annual gaming showcase wrapped up in Cologne, Germany.

Across 19 categories, the awards recognized the games, developers, publishers, and booths that made the biggest impression at this year’s event.

‘The Witcher 3’ refuses to retire

Perhaps the biggest surprise was seeing “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” dominate the awards despite originally launching in 2015.

CD Projekt Red’s fantasy RPG won Best Trailer/Announcement for its newly revealed remaster and “Songs of the Past” expansion, while its booth also took home Best Booth.

The game also won Best Merch for the pins and medallions available to visitors.

The awards add another chapter to the game’s unusually long lifespan.

“The Witcher 3” remains one of the most celebrated RPGs of its generation, and the announcement of new content more than a decade after its original release shows that Geralt’s adventures still have plenty of life left in them.

‘Warhammer’ takes the PC crown

While “The Witcher 3” dominated the broader awards haul, it was “Total War: Warhammer 40,000” that took one of the night’s biggest game-specific prizes.

The strategy game from Creative Assembly and SEGA won Best PC Game, marking a major moment for the long-running “Total War” franchise as it moves from historical and fantasy battlefields into the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40,000.

The game combines Total War’s massive-scale strategy with Warhammer 40,000’s science-fiction warfare, putting armies of Space Marines and other factions into battles that could be among the franchise’s biggest yet.

SEGA also picked up Best Audio for “Alien: Isolation 2” and Best Lineup, giving the publisher three awards overall.

More big winners

CD Projekt Red and SEGA weren’t the only publishers leaving Cologne with multiple trophies.

Capcom and Ubisoft each picked up two awards, while Games Done Quick received the special Heart of Gaming Award.

Capcom’s wins further highlighted its presence at the show, while Ubisoft also managed a two-award haul among a field that included some of the industry’s biggest publishers.

But the awards weren’t simply a battle between established names.

Gamescom 2026 also put the spotlight on upcoming games that generated buzz during the event, including titles such as “Warlock,” “Ananta,” “Lego: Skylines,” “Heroes of Might” and “Magic 3,” “Metro 2039” and “The Blood of Dawnwalker.”
