Gaming news: Viral indie fashion game ‘Dressmaker’ debuts with ‘overwhelmingly positive’ reviews

Cozy tailoring indie game “Dressmaker” has been receiving praise online, debuting with overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam.

It is undeniably a universal experience for gamers during the 2000s to have a childhood of dress-up Flash games, now it is 2026 and a wave of nostalgia hits people with this satisfying tailoring gameplay from an indie developer.

Dressmaker was developed by Cozy Lives, a subsidiary of South African indie studio and publisher Free Lives.

Released on September 21, it peaked at around 43,000 players on Saturday, with more than 7,000 reviews on Steam to accumulate an “overwhelmingly positive” rating.

A sweet gesture for the developer’s wife

While the game has been making rounds on the internet, a story behind the creation of the sewing simulator touched people’s hearts, as it was originally made for the developer’s wife — who lost the ability to sew.

It started as a passion project for developer Jonathan Hau-Yoon and artist Sabrina Becker — who are a married couple.

According to developer Hau-Yoon, the game was created to help his wife, Becker, to continue her love for tailoring, despite losing her ability to sew.

Becker, who is also a dressmaking and fashion history enthusiast, has hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

The connective tissue disorder causes her to have severe fatigue, joint pain, and unstable flexible joints.

The couple worked together for the development, as they both share an interest in gaming.

What’s fun about it?

If you are someone who enjoyed flash games in the 2000s, this will be a trip down the memory lane for you.

You, as a dressmaker, will have clients come for their specific requests of dresses.

You also have the freedom to choose fabrics, color palettes, cutouts, materials for designing, as well as to how you will be spending your budget.

Some clients will be nice, while some are very meticulous and hard to impress.

Many players regarded the game as a realistic simulator for tailoring, noting that they have been spending hours making their dream dresses.

The game is available on Windows, macOS and Linux.
