Former US pop star Britney Spears was pulled over and arrested on Wednesday 4th March for driving under the influence of alcohol before being released early Thursday morning.

California Highway Patrol were responding to a 911 call claiming Spears’ vehicle was swerving and braking erratically.

Spears’ manager Cade Hadson told TMZ that “this incident is completely inexcusable”.

“Spears will comply with the law and take appropriate measures,” Hadson said, adding that “we hope this becomes the first step toward the long-needed change in her life.”

Previous run-ins

This is not the first time Spears has fallen on the wrong side of the law.

In 2007, she faced charges for an alleged hit-and-run, but these were later dropped.

2007 to 2008 marked the height of Spears’ very public personal crisis, in which she shaved her hair off and was photographed attacking a paparazzi with an umbrella.

She was placed on psychiatric hold and sent to rehab.

Her father, Jamie Spears, was then granted full conservatorship over Spears in October 2008.

He had sole control of Spears’ financial and personal affairs, until allegations of abuse and a vocal online movement led to the conservatorship’s end in November 2021.

Was ‘Free Britney’ the right move?

In light of the ‘Free Britney’ movement, which helped end her conservatorship, Spears’ family have stated they are scared to intervene in her recent worrying behaviour due to fears of provoking backlash.

Spears had been seen acting and dancing erratically in videos on her Instagram profile, which she has since deleted following the arrest.

According to her bodyguards, Spears apparently fired her sobriety coach just a few weeks before the drunk-driving incident.

Earlier in February, Spears sold the rights to all her music for a reported $200 million.

The pop star said in January she wished to never perform in the US again.

After a string of high-profile breakdowns and incidents, Spears’ former partners all stressed for her privacy at this time.
