Fans of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ got an exclusive first look at the upcoming sequel film set to release in 2027.
The image was shared on Instagram by Kirsten Dunst (‘Spider-Man’, ‘Bring It On’), who is joining the film as the co-lead to Jack Black.
‘A Minecraft Movie’: A new kind of “block-buster”
‘A Minecraft Movie’ (2025) is the first film adaptation of the popular Swedish video game, ‘Minecraft’.
Popularised for its blocky graphics and open-world, sandbox nature, the game has grown immensely since its 2009 release to become the best-selling videogame of all time.
A film adaptation was in the works for over a decade until the 2025 adventure comedy was put into production.
Starring Black as the game’s iconic character Steve, the film received mixed reviews from fans for its tone and story, despite its commercial success.
The film notoriously erupted on social media through a series of viral trends and videos upon its April release.
One particular trend, which saw young cinemagoers cheering and jumping around in cinemas excitedly during particular story moments, caused a lot of cinemas to put out formal statements and warnings against misconduct.

‘A Minecraft Sequel’
The sequel to the film was announced on October 9, with director Jared Hess and co-writer Chris Galetta set to return.
Dunst was announced to feature as Alex, the second character from the game.
Her casting follows a post-credit scene from the first film where the red-headed character is briefly seen answering the door for Steve.
The sequel film is set to release on July 23, 2027.
