British-American actor Andrew Garfield was spotted in San Francisco on the set of Luca Guadagnino’s new film, ‘Artificial’.
Garfield, 41, is set to play OpenAI’s creator and CEO Sam Altman.
The comedy-drama follows Altman’s controversial firing and rehiring from his company in just a matter of days in 2023.
‘Uncanny valley’
In the pictures, Garfield looks youthful and notably different compared to his usual self.
Wearing jeans and a puffer jacket, Garfield was spotted showing off a new haircut and a slightly altered appearance, which sent fans into a frenzy online.
“Did they live-action-de-age him? He looks to be in his 20s all of a sudden… but it’s off somehow, in a disturbing way”, a user wrote on Reddit.
“It’s uncanny valley sorry but I can’t work out what they’ve done to his face”, someone else wrote on X.
‘Uncanny valley’ is a term often used online to refer to people or situations that look very similar to reality, but something about them looks off, although difficult to identify.
Cambridge Dictionary explains it as an ‘unpleasant feeling that some people have when they see robots, or pictures of a human being created by a computer, that appear very similar to a living human.’
Commenting on the pictures, an Instagram user simply said: “He looks artificial”.

Garfield and Guadagnino reunited again
‘Artificial’ marks the second collaboration between Garfield and Italian director Luca Guadagnino.
The two worked together in the recent movie ‘After the Hunt’.
The film will be presented at this year’s Venice International Film Festival, which will begin on August 27.
Garfield is no stranger to tech industry biopics.
He famously starred as Eduardo Saverin in ‘The Social Network’ (2010), directed by David Fincher.
The film, also starring Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, recounted the origins of the website and was a commercial and critical success.
‘Artificial’ also stars Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati, OpenAI’s CTO at the time.
She was also spotted on the San Francisco set.
Barbaro and Garfield made their official debut as a couple just a few weeks ago, when they were spotted at Wimbledon together.
Cooper Hoffman, son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, will play OpenAI’s co-founder and current president Greg Brockman.
Ike Barinholtz will play billionaire Elon Musk.
