Senior figures within Germany’s conservative alliance of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) have agreed to nominate Ilse Aigner as their official candidate to succeed Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in 2027.

According to Deutsche Welle, Chancellor Friedrich Merz is scheduled to formally present Aigner’s nomination during the executive committee meeting.

The 61-year-old politician currently serves as the President of the Bavarian State Parliament and previously served as Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection under former Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The agreement caps weeks of internal debate regarding Steinmeier’s successor.

By supporting Aigner, the CDU leadership aligns with Chancellor Merz’s stated commitment to put forward a centrist, female candidate for the nation’s highest state office.

Cross-party support, parliamentary math

Aigner has gathered substantial endorsement across party lines, including key backing from coalition partner the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

SPD leadership indicated that the party would welcome her candidacy, citing her extensive legislative experience at both federal and state levels and her reputation for fostering political consensus.

The federal president is chosen by the Federal Convention, a body composed of Bundestag lawmakers alongside delegates selected by Germany’s 16 state parliaments.

With the combined votes of the CDU-CSU alliance and the Social Democratic Party, Aigner commands a clear parliamentary majority ahead of the formal vote scheduled for January 30.

Potential historic milestone for Germany

If elected by the Federal Convention, Aigner will become the first female federal president since the establishment of the Federal Republic in 1949, as well as the first member of the Bavarian CSU to hold the head of state position.

Political analysts noted that while the federal presidency is predominantly ceremonial, the office carries significant moral authority and acts as a stabilising voice during periods of political polarisation.

Party officials expressed confidence that Aigner’s background in regional and national governance positions her effectively to represent Germany both domestically and internationally.
