Music news: Lana Del Rey announces surprise double album

The Queen of Melancholia is making her long-awaited comeback this year with not just one, but two albums.

Lana Del Rey announced her latest project on Wednesday, July 15, in a lengthy Instagram post accompanied with a carousel of photos and videos.

The post included a framed portrait of herself titled “Stove” and a vinyl artwork featuring an image of boat named “Spyda”.

The artist also included clips of fireworks and another of her dancing with her cat.

The American singer-songwriter described “Stove” as a “classic album” with tracks fans have already heard live.

The concept

The upcoming 10th album – originally titled “Lasso” and “The Right Person Will Stay” – has been in development since early 2024 and will follow 2023’s “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd”.

“Stove” will be joined by a large, still-untitled companion album, which Del Rey said is a “commentary of sorts” on everything that has been going on over the past four years.

The album has been compiled by as many people who could help her gather her thoughts.

She said she needs at least a month to put the compilation together before preparing the two albums to be manufactured on vinyl.

‘My most beautiful pieces of work’

The “Born to Die” hitmaker labeled the two albums as her “most beautiful pieces of work”, and expressed gratitude to everyone who has contributed to her project.

“It certainly is two of my most beautiful pieces of work, rooted in what I thought would be made out of growth and joy but was peppered with a secondary compilation of songs that sprouted from doubt, hopefulness, and the understanding that new beginnings truly mean starting completely fresh and over,” Del Rey, who just turned 41 last month, wrote on Instagram.

“When life decides to send you down another river, it’s really not your choice and it’s truly an adventure of its own.”

She went on to thank fans for patiently waiting for her return, adding: “I’m so grateful to everyone who’s still on board with me. And of course, I wish the best to everyone who stayed on land. Of course I understand,

“Just kidding. I thought we were in the boat together.”
