NBA: Philadelphia 76ers improve to 2-0 after come-from-behind win over Cleveland Cavaliers

The Philadelphia 76ers came from 29 points down to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers, 114-106, on Thursday night in a 2026-27 NBA regular season game at the Xfinity Mobile Arena.

With all eyes on superstar forward LeBron James, who made his first home game since landing in Philadelphia as a free agent, the 76ers bucked a slow start to follow up on their victory against defending champions New York Knicks in the season-opener.

Sixers’ ‘Big 4’ step up

Fans were excited prior to tipoff as the four-time Most Valuable Player made his home debut months after Philadelphia executed the deal that sent James to the East Coast after eight seasons of playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The excitement, however, turned to boos, as the 76ers struggled early, coughing up 15 turnovers in the first half that allowed the Cavaliers – James’ former team – to lead by as many as 29 points.

Down 69-45 at the start of the third quarter, James, Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and another offseason acquisition, Jaylen Brown, turned up the jets and throttled the Cavaliers with a 37-21 surge that reduced the deficit to single digits.

Philadelphia fight back

The 76ers continued their offensive in the payoff period, outscoring Cleveland 32-16, to complete the reversal.

Embiid, known as “The Process,” buried a jumper to cap his own seven-point run, allowing Philly to secure a 96-95 lead.

The 76ers held the Cavs and more points in the final stretches of the game to improve to 2-0.

Maxey finished with 32 points while Embiid added 24. Brown added 21 points and 8 rebounds while James contributed 17 markers, 10 rebounds and 5 assists to help the Sixers orchestrate their biggest comeback of the play-by-play era that started in 1996.

James, the NBA all-time leading scorer, also recorded his biggest come-from-behind win in his career. He described it as a good win, but he is hoping it doesn’t happen that often for the team.

Donovan Mitchell scored 22 of his 32 points in the first half to lead the Cavaliers’ offense.

Evan Mobley added 18, but had just three in the second half. Jarrett Allen scored 14 but was held scoreless after the break.

The 76ers hope to continue their unbeaten run this weekend as they host Milwaukee on Saturday and Detroit on Sunday.
