Nintendo modernises ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ in new remake

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time remake

Some adventures never really end; they just wait for the right time to be played again.

Nearly three decades after ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ first introduced players to Hyrule, Nintendo is bringing the title back with a full remake for the Switch 2 on November 5.

Journalists and content creators who tested the game’s demo during an event at the company’s European headquarters in Frankfurt said the game modernises the 1998 classic with updated visuals, better gameplay and expanded storytelling, while also preserving the adventure that left an impact on gamers for generations.

Timeless adventure

The remake arrives as Nintendo marks the ‘Legend of Zelda’ franchise’s 40th anniversary.

Alongside graphical upgrades, the new version introduces redesigned puzzles, smoother controls, partial voice acting, an orchestrated soundtrack and quality-of-life improvements.

In a report by Agence France-Presse, journalists who previewed the remake said Nintendo modernised the game while remaining faithful to the original.

Paul de Barbeyrac of Jeux Video Magazine said Nintendo seemed intent on keeping the remake faithful to the original game despite introducing modern improvements.

“You notice the work done on textures and lighting,” Barbeyrac said, according to AFP.

He added that it really “elevates the original material.”

Rebuilding nostalgia

Rather than recreating the original game scene by scene, Nintendo has reworked parts of the experience to make exploration and progression feel more natural.

Preview sessions showed expanded dialogue, revised dungeon puzzles, updated enemy encounters and subtle world-building changes designed to give Hyrule a stronger sense of place.

Video gaming media website IGN, which published a detailed breakdown after playing the remake, said the game “is not a 1:1 remake.”

It described the game’s redesigned puzzles, deeper character interactions, upgraded textures and more detailed character models as additions that give the world greater depth.

Additionally, the improvements include full camera control, a dedicated jump button and easier movement around the game.

The publication also noted that the remake embraces a theatrical presentation inspired by one of the original game’s influences.

Barbeyrac said the remake builds on the foundation that helped define 3D action-adventure games.

“Ocarina of Time basically wrote the rulebook for 3D Zelda games,” he told AFP.

Journey through Hyrule

At its core, ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ follows Link, a young hero from Kokiri Forest who is tasked with defeating the evil King of the Gerudo, Ganondorf, and bringing peace to the kingdom of Hyrule.

Guided by Princess Zelda and a magical ocarina, Link must uncover the secrets of the Triforce and confront a threat that stretches across time itself.

The game follows Link’s transformation from someone discovering the world beyond his forest home into the legendary Hero of Time.

Along the way, he meets allies from different races and regions of Hyrule, including the Gorons and Zora, while exploring dungeons and awakening ancient powers needed to face Ganondorf.

The story’s themes of friendship, sacrifice and the passage of time helped turn ‘Ocarina of Time’ into one of the most celebrated video games ever.
