The Philippine government has expanded its digitalisation efforts to the maritime sector, allowing seafarers to book appointments with the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) through the eGovPH mobile app.

The move aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s broader agenda to modernise government services, promoting transparency and efficiency.

Streamlining processes for the maritime workforce

MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan highlighted that the integration aims to simplify processes for obtaining essential documents such as the Seafarer’s Record Book (SRB) and the Seafarer’s Identity Document (SID), the Philippine News Agency reported.

The digital platform is expected to reduce long queues and administrative delays, providing a more seamless experience for Filipino seafarers, who form a significant portion of the global maritime workforce.

Malaluan emphasised that adopting digital solutions enhances accessibility and efficiency, recognising the vital role of seafarers in the international economy.

She reiterated MARINA’s commitment to continuous innovation to maintain the Philippines’ reputation for maritime excellence.

A larger digital initiative

The eGovPH app, developed by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), serves as a centralised digital hub for various government services.

Available on multiple platforms, the app not only facilitates maritime document applications but also provides digital identification, access to national and local government services, and a platform for reporting crimes and public concerns.

By integrating maritime services into the digital ecosystem, the Philippine government is taking steps to modernise governance, improve public sector efficiency, and support the country’s vast network of seafarers who contribute significantly to global trade.
