TV news: “Only Murders in the Building” brings the mystery to London in star-studded Season 6

Only Murders in the Building goes to London

The Arconia’s resident true crime aficionados are heading to London with a new case to pursue in Season 6 of ‘Only Murders in the Building.’

This marks the first time the hit Hulu comedy will be taking place overseas and the second time outside New York after making a short stop to Los Angeles for Season 4.

There has also been speculation that the show could be renamed ‘Only Murders in London’, as seen in its promotional display at the recent D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in California, complete with a rotating London Eye Ferris wheel and a red telephone booth.

‘Only Murders’, which began streaming in 2021, brings together Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as Charles Haden-Savage, Oliver Putnam, and Mabel Mora, neighbors who host a podcast investigating homicides in their fancy Upper West Side apartment complex in Manhattan.

Fish and chips… and foul play

Now, one might ask: Why London?

Season 5 ended in a cliffhanger, with the trio’s cunning rival podcaster Cinda Canning collapsing dead right in front of the gates of the Arconia while holding a bloody New York-London boarding pass.

Before Cinda’s shocking death, she had been looking into “The Girl with the Curls”, a case involving a red-haired young woman who is accused of murdering a royal descendant in England.

“The public has turned against her, and fueled by the British tabloids, there have been threats against her life. But I believe this girl with the curls is innocent, and I feel a strong need to protect her, to send her to America, which may be the only place she can be safe,” Cinda said in her podcast in the last season’s finale.

Still a ‘New York show’

John Hoffman, who co-created ‘Only Murders in the Building’ with comedy legend Steve Martin, said the transatlantic move to London seeks to give fans a fresher take on the show.

“There’s no way around a certain understanding of needing to freshen up a show. I mean, how many murders can be in one building?” he said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“It felt like the right time. I love the idea of however we can broaden the reach of the show and put the trio in new situations, new landscapes for a moment.”

Hoffman also assured that ‘Only Murders’ will remain a “New York show” even though an entire season is filmed in London.
