Rooftop solar is expanding rapidly across Vietnam, particularly in the country’s northern region.
More than 13,000 customers have installed rooftop solar systems in northern Vietnam.
In July alone, 2,981 customers installed systems with a combined capacity of 105.3 megawatts, according to Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC).
Accessibility
During the first seven months of the year, 11,481 customers in northern Vietnam, excluding Hanoi, installed systems with a combined capacity of 499.9MW.
As of July 31, the total number of customers across EVNNPC’s service area had reached 13,080, with overall installed capacity standing at 823.7MW.
The declining cost of rooftop solar systems, together with a wider range of equipment and technologies, has made the systems increasingly accessible to households and businesses.
For households, rooftop solar can substantially reduce monthly electricity bills, while some businesses have reported annual electricity savings worth tens of billions of Vietnamese dong.

Support from local government units
Local authorities have introduced plans and action programs to promote rooftop solar while working with the power sector to provide information and assist individuals and organizations with project procedures, VietNamNet Global reported.
Several provinces and cities have also incorporated rooftop solar targets into green transition and sustainable development programs.
In late July, Bac Ninh Province, east of Ha Noi, approved a resolution providing financial support for households installing rooftop solar systems and battery storage at private homes.
The policy, effective from August 1, 2026, to December 31, 2030, provides a subsidy of about $38 per kilowatt-peak for rooftop solar, capped at around $115 per household.
Households installing integrated battery storage can receive an additional subsidy of approximately $38 per kilowatt-hour, also capped at about $115 per household.

Lai Chau targets off-grid households
Lai Chau Province, a mountainous locality in the northwest, also adopted a resolution establishing support policies for solar systems and downstream electrical equipment.
The policy targets eligible ethnic minority, poor, and near-poor households living in areas connected to the 0.4-kilovolt low-voltage grid but without access to the national electricity network.
Households that lack grid electricity because the power sector has been unable to invest in 0.4-kV distribution infrastructure are also eligible.
Under the scheme, Lai Chau provides about $1,920 per household for solar systems, covering equipment, transportation, and installation.
An additional subsidy of around $190 is available for electrical equipment installed after the meter.
