Over the last year, social media users have been ‘obsessed’ with actor Timothée Chalamet and his strange connections to the city of Liverpool.

A recent encounter at the Critics’ Choice Awards has continued the fuel.

American-French actor Chalamet met young British actor Owen Cooper at the awards in California after asking for a selfie.

Witnesses heard Chalamet ask Cooper where he was from after spotting an image of late Liverpool FC player ‘Diogo Joto’ on his phone screen.

Chalamet was heard saying “RIP Diogo Jota” before the 16-year-old informed the ‘Marty Supreme’ star that he was from Warrington (20 miles from Liverpool) and didn’t have a real Scouse accent.

Jota was a Liverpool FC forward who tragically died at the age of just 28 in a road traffic accident in July 2025, five years into a successful Reds career.

Why does Timothée Chalamet have a connection to Liverpool?

The connection between Chalamet and Liverpool initially started from an internet conspiracy theory that the actor was in fact the anonymous Scouse rapper ‘EsDeeKid’.

Fans believed the Wonka star was the popular rapper due to the huge eye resemblance.

EsDeeKid is only ever seen masked so that his identity is kept a secret.

Chalamet was asked about his connection multiple times by media outlets in 2025 to which his reply came: “All will be revealed in due time.”

Then, finally, in December, all was in fact revealed as Chalamet performed alongside the rapper in a video on a remix of the musician’s top 40 hit 4Raws, thus quashing the rumours.

In the music video, Chalamet appeared to refer to the rumours by starting with only his eyes on show, like the drill artist, before pulling down the bandana and rapping: “It’s Timothée Chalamet chillin’, tryin’ to stack $100 million.”

He then referenced his partner, Kylie Jenner, with the line: “Girl got $1 billion.”

Internet sleuths also found a connection between the 30-year-old and Liverpool FC player Joe Gomez.

An unearthed photo shows Chalamet as a child lining up for a team picture beside London-born Gomez.

The image was shared on Instagram by Manhattan Kickers Soccer Club and shows the two boys kneeling next to each other.

It is understood that the pair played for different teams at a youth tournament.
