Sami Zayn shocked the wrestling world as he won the Undisputed WWE Championship in the main event of “Night of Champions” held at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Zayn won the championship by outlasting his close ally Cody Rhodes and one of his greatest foes Gunther.
The win marks his first world championship in his 13-year WWE career, making him a Grand Slam Champion as he is a former Intercontinental Champion, United States Champion and Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champion.
The triple threat match is also his 10th attempt at a world championship belt.
Zayn and his fighting spirit
During the last moments of the match, Zayn showcased his fighting spirit, as he was at the receiving end of Gunther and his massive “Chops”.
As Gunther mocked Zayn and continued to “Chop” him, “The Last Real Good Guy” found his footing and countered with an “Exploder Suplex” to a “Helluva Kick”, but it was not enough to put down the Austrian.
Zayn, who was in disbelief, picked up Gunther but his opponent replied with a “Clothesline”.
Gunther then set up Zayn for a “Powerbomb”, but Rhodes interrupted with a “Cody Cutter”.
Rhodes then primed Zayn to a “Cross Rhodes”, but Zayn countered with a “Cross Rhodes” of his own.
The mimicry continued as Zayn countered Gunther’s “Sleeper Hold” attempt with the same submission.
“The American Nightmare” interrupted yet again with a “Cross Rhodes” to both men, as Gunther was tossed out of the ring.
Rhodes continued his offence with another “Cross Rhodes” attempt to Zayn, but the slippery Zayn countered with a roll-up pin for the victory.

‘A miracle in Riyadh’
The Saudi crowd went ballistic when the referee counted to three, as Zayn was visibly emotional when he was handed the belt.
The commentators acknowledged the arduous journey that the new champion had to face before this moment.
“…It happened, on his 10th try, Sami Zayn finally is champion,” commentator Michael Cole exclaimed. “A miracle in Riyadh.”
“All of the years, all of the miles, all of the broken hearts and the sacrifice has led to this point, to the top of the mountain. Sami Zayn is WWE Champion,” commentator Corey Graves stated.
During the post-show segment, Zayn was ecstatic as he basked in the cheers and chants of the audience.
“I don’t care what happens to me tomorrow, next week, next month, next year. Forever, I will be, Sami Zayn, WWE champion.”
