BLACKPINK member Lisa will make her Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) debut this September with the world premiere of her documentary, “Always Lalisa”, festival organisers announced.

The documentary has been selected for the prestigious Gala program of the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, which will take place from September 10 to 20 in Toronto, Canada.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sue Kim, the film offers an intimate look at the Thai superstar’s journey as she embarks on a new chapter beyond BLACKPINK.

From Thai hopeful to global superstar

According to the film’s description, “Always Lalisa” follows Lisa during a pivotal year as she steps away from the group’s activities to pursue her solo music career, acting ambitions, and personal growth before reuniting with BLACKPINK.

Born Lalisa Manobal in Thailand, Lisa began her path to stardom after competing against thousands of hopefuls during a YG Entertainment audition in Bangkok.

She later secured a trainee position and became the company’s first non-ethnic Korean trainee before making her debut with BLACKPINK in 2016.

The 97-minute documentary features dialogue in English, Thai, and Korean.

A year of milestones

The documentary captures several career-defining moments following Lisa’s departure from YG Entertainment.

Most recently, Lisa performed the song “Goals” alongside Anitta and Rema at the FIFA Club World Cup opening ceremony.

The documentary also follows the release of her debut solo album Alter Ego, her acting debut in HBO’s “The White Lotus”, her solo performance at Coachella, her appearance at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and her history-making performance at the Academy Awards, where she became the first K-pop artist to perform on the Oscars stage.

Fans react to ‘Always Lalisa’

Following the announcement, fans around the world celebrated the news on social media, expressing their excitement over the chance to see a more personal side of the global K-pop star.

One user on X described the documentary as “a huge milestone” for the BLACKPINK member, writing, “Can’t wait to see her story told on the big screen – this is going to be special.”

Longtime fans also shared messages of support, saying they were proud of Lisa’s journey from her trainee days to becoming a global star.

Many also said they looked forward to seeing a more personal side of the singer and learning more about her life behind the spotlight.

Not all reactions were positive, however. Some social media users questioned the timing of the documentary, arguing that it was “too early” in Lisa’s solo career to release a film about her life.

The documentary is produced by Sony Music Vision in association with RCA Records and Tremolo Productions, in collaboration with Salt Water Productions and LLOUD CO.

The exact release date will be announced on August 11.
