Mindy Kaling’s 'Not Suitable for Work' not returning for Season 2 on Hulu

Not Suitable for Work will not be returning for a second season on Hulu, leaving viewers with a chaotic cliffhanger that will go unresolved.

The American streamer did not provide a reason behind the cancellation, while producer Warner Bros. was reportedly planning to pitch the series to other networks and platforms, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter reported on August 24.

Mindy Kaling’s sitcom joined other Hulu shows on the chopping block, including crime-comedy Deli Boys, dating reality series Love Overboard, and Chloe Zhao’s planned reboot of the ’90s supernatural classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Gen Z sitcom

Not Suitable for Work featured an ensemble cast of Ella Hunt, Avantika Vandanapu, Will Angus, Jack Martin, and Nicholas Duvernay as five young, work-obsessed New Yorkers navigating their careers and personal lives.

It also included guest stars Jay Ellis, Constance Wu, Victor Garber, Harry Richardson, Ego Nwodim, Greg Germann, and Judy Gold, and a cameo appearance from Gigi Hadid.

The series wrapped up its nine-episode run in late June, with AJ (Hunt) and Davis (Angus) sharing a passionate kiss after her co-worker confessed he has a crush on her. This scene was unfortunately witnessed by Josh (Martin), who also harbours feelings for AJ.

Not Suitable for Work holds a 54% score from critics and 82% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mixed reactions

After learning her show had been cancelled, Kaling took to Instagram to pay tribute to her cast, crew, and fans.

“I love this show, I loved making this show, I love these people, and I love all of you for all your sweet comments, messages, edits and for watching @notsuitableforwork,” she wrote in a post accompanied by behind-the-scenes photos from production.

An alum of The Office, Kaling is also known for showrunning Netflix’s Never Have I Ever and Running Point, HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls, NBC’s Champions, and Fox’s The Mindy Project.

Many fans were also left saddened by the cancellation, with one starting a Change.org petition urging Hulu to reverse its decision.

“This show is the closest I’ve felt to feeling like I could relate to a show. It’s a show that feels like it was written and advertised for Gen Z and I feel like many shows for us feel more like a millennial show,” a supporter of the petition said.

At the time of writing, the petition – which calls for a continuation of slow-burn romance tropes between AJ and Josh and Kel (Duvernay) and Abby (Vandanapu) – has so far amassed 11,883 signatures.

Another fan even appealed to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to save the show.

“Hulu cancelled Not Suitable for Work and it is greatly impacting the community. Considering this is fictionally in your jurisdiction (Murray Hill) would you please take initiative and mediate this situation by contacting Hulu HQ as soon as possible,” the fan wrote.

Others said Not Suitable for Work has already run its course.

“It feels like the show didn’t even really know its demographic because of all the generations currently in the workforce, I think Gen Z is the least work-obsessed so that felt a bit inauthentic,” an Instagram user wrote.

“This one tried to be those but just fell short,” another said, comparing it to other Gen Z sitcoms like Adults and Overcompensating.
