WWE news: Sami Zayn wins back WWE Championship from CM Punk

Sami Zayn pulled off a shock victory to reclaim the Undisputed WWE Championship against CM Punk in a chaotic bout in the latest episode of SmackDown.

The victory in Mexico City marked Zayn’s second world title, as he lost his first run with the belt to Punk in July after only a nine-day reign.

Zayn has been on a warpath to reclaim the gold ever since that loss to Punk, as he sabotaged matches and even betrayed his best friend, Kevin Owens.

During the show, Zayn spoke with Johnny Gargano before the championship bout.

The refreshed Gargano demanded that if Zayn is victorious, he will be next in line for a championship opportunity.

“I got you, alright. I got you,” Zayn promised.

Mexico City wants Punk victory

The crowd heavily cheered for Punk, who was sporting the Mexican flag’s colours in his ring gear.

With every strike that Zayn landed, a chorus of boos followed as they favoured The Best in the World.

Throughout the match, the challenger took advantage of Punk’s hurt left knee, which he damaged early in the bout.

Zayn’s targeted attacks proved effective, as the champion limped and winced when he got his offence in.

The damage took its toll on Punk when he hit Zayn with a GTS and he could not capitalise on the move as his knee gave out.

Punk signalled for another GTS to seal the deal, but chaos was about to descend.

Gargano, Owens appear

As Punk was picking up the corpse of Zayn, Gargano and his wife, Candice LeRae, came out to mess with the champion.

Zayn then went for a Figure-four to Punk but the champion reversed it to an Anaconda Vice.

The challenger tapped out, but LeRae was distracting the referee who did not see what was happening.

Gargano then looked to attack Punk with the belt, but the exhausted Punk countered the ambush with a GTS, further hurting his knee.

Owens then appeared to stop the shenanigans, also grabbing the belt to try and hit Zayn.

However, Zayn ducked and Owens accidentally hit Punk instead.

Zayn then hit Owens with a low blow, and landed a Helluva Kick to the dazed Punk to win his second WWE Championship.
