Nineties heartthrobs Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in talks to return for a new instalment in The Mummy franchise, according to various entertainment sources.

The duo have starred in two Mummy movies together: 1999’s The Mummy and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns.

Both films were huge successes at the box office, grossing over $400 million worldwide each, although they received mixed reviews from film critics.

Negative commentary didn’t stop the movies from becoming cult favourites, though, with fans still rewatching them after almost three decades.

Rick and Evy are back

The new Mummy chapter will be the fourth in the saga.

After the first two films, Fraser returned for a third outing in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which was released in 2008.

Weisz’s character, British Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan, did not make an appearance.

Fraser plays the main character of the series, Richard ‘Rick’ O’Connell, an American adventurer and treasure hunter.

The original blockbuster followed Rick and Evelyn as they unintentionally revived the mummified remains of a priest and then tried to stop him from taking over the world in 1923 Egypt.

Universal Pictures, the studio behind that film and its sequels, is producing the new project, although studio reps have declined to comment on the news so far.

Fraser wants ‘a thrill ride’

Universal has already tried to revive the saga once, back in 2017 when they released the unhelpfully titled The Mummy, a modern-day reboot starring Tom Cruise.

The film received universally negative reviews and failed to revive the franchise.

Speaking during the press tour of The Whale, the 2022 drama movie that brought him back to the set after a long and tormented pause, Fraser said he would be open to playing Rick O’Connell again.

He also commented on Cruise’s failed effort, stating: “It’s hard to make that movie. The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in the new one, was fun.

“That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie.

The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
