The live-action Scooby-Doo series has been officially titled “Scooby-Doo: Origins”, Netflix revealed, with production kicking off in Atlanta. However, it’s unclear when the series will premiere.

Production has begun on “Scooby-Doo: Origins”, Netflix’s live-action take on the iconic crime-solving crew, and it’s going back to where things all began.

Based on the characters from Hanna-Barbera, the upcoming series is a modern reimagining of the beloved group of teens and their very special dog, exploring the terrifying first case that brings Mystery Inc. together for good.

More than 50 years after its debut, “Scooby-Doo” remains one of pop-culture’s most recognisable franchises, spanning multiple animated series and theatrical films.

But, according to Netflix, the new series is less about what audiences already know, and more about how it all started.

What is “Scooby-Doo: Origins” about?

Few people know how the cowardly dog and his mystery-solving gang first got together, and in “Scooby-Doo: Origins”, showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg are going back to the beginning with the terrifying case that started it all.

During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy who may have been a witness to a supernatural murder.

Alongside the scientific townie Velma and the strange but ever-so-handsome new kid Freddy, they set out to solve the case that’s pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.

The live-action will be starring Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones.

According to Netflix, Paul Walter Hauser is also joining the cast in a currently undisclosed role.

Production details

The series will be executive produced by Rosenberg and Appelbaum, as well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman (via Berlanti Productions), and André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson (via Midnight Radio).

Toby Haynes will also serve as an executive producer and direct the premiere episode.

“One of my first and favorite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cels,” said Berlanti in a statement.

“Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation.”

There has been no word on exactly when “Scooby-Doo:Origins” will premiere as audiences eagerly await further details.
