Film news: ‘Mortal Kombat II’ slams down with record-breaking opening weekend

Mortal Kombat 2

This weekend, the release of ‘Mortal Kombat II’ broke records as the largest opening weekend for a ‘Mortal Kombat’ film, earning $40 million in the domestic box office and an additional $23 million worldwide.

The film, based on the iconic fighting video game franchise of the same name, continues the story from the 2021 film.

The sequel’s initial earnings almost tripled that of the previous film’s opening weekend.

It is projected to end its cinematic run as one of the top 30 highest earning video game film adaptations.

From arcade to cinema

‘Mortal Kombat’ is one of the highest grossing media franchises of all time, and is the best-selling fighting game franchise worldwide.

With the first game releasing in 1992, the franchise has evolved from a 2D arcade fighter to a vast fictional universe spanning across 26 iterations.

The games are known for their iconic characters, violent combat graphics and dramatic ‘fatality’ finishing moves.

Previous ‘Mortal Kombat’ films

The first live-action ‘Mortal Kombat’ film from 1995 accumulated over $122 million worldwide.

While this film was successful both financially and within the ‘Mortal Kombat’ fan community, the 1997 sequel and 2021 reboot film similarly received mixed reviews and far lower total earnings.

What to expect in ‘Mortal Kombat II’?

The 2026 film finds fighters competing to protect the Earthrealm against the dark tyrant Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford).

A central character debut in the sequel is Johnny Cage, a quick-witted, fan-favourite fighter played by Karl Urban (‘The Boys’, ‘The Lord of the Rings’).

Cage is joined by Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) as they battle in the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament.

A competitive cinematic run

Despite the record-breaking start, the film is competing against the ‘Devil Wears Prada’ legacy sequel and the Michael Jackson biopic.

Nevertheless, it is projected to exceed its $80 million budget and potentially break the 1995 film’s total box office record.

Notably, ‘Mortal Kombat II’ is not the only fighting game to get an adaptation in 2026. The equally iconic ‘Street Fighter’ franchise has a film scheduled for release in October.

‘Mortal Kombat II’ is currently available in cinemas worldwide.
