Netflix has reportedly scrapped its long-planned project, ‘Heckler’, the American spinoff of South Korea’s hit survival thriller series, ‘Squid Game’.
A change in priorities and slow development prompted the streaming giant’s decision.
The spinoff announcement in 2024 coincided with the consistent dominance of ‘Squid Game’ in multiple Netflix charts, specifically the ‘Global Top 10 for Non-English TV Shows’, ‘Most Popular Non-English TV List’ and ‘Top 10 TV Show lists’.
A stalled spinoff
David Fincher, known for his acclaimed films such as ‘Se7en’ (1995), ‘Fight Club’ (1999) and ‘Gone Girl’ (2014) was chosen to direct this project with a script written by ‘Utopia’ creator Dennis Kelly.
The worldwide hype for the original series apparently helped bolster audience anticipation for ‘Heckler’.
However, the nearly two-year development of this project did not progress into production due to lost momentum, according to industry reports.
Fincher’s shift in prioritised projects, including the feature film ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’, also lowered the chances of the spinoff pushing through.
Delays were further amplified when Netflix made crucial adjustments in its strategy and changed executive leadership.
Netflix changes the game
A related report from The Korea Times cited that the streaming giant is now seemingly more inclined to create projects specifically tailored for individual international markets, instead of focusing on a single English-language expansion of ‘Squid Game’.
The decision also dispels rumours that the spinoff would follow the story of the mysterious American recruiter portrayed by actress Cate Blanchett in a surprise appearance during the Season 3 finale.
The Playlist even clarified that the character’s revelation had no connection to the main plot of ‘Heckler’.
Despite its emergence in 2024 and production speculations in 2026, Netflix reportedly gave no official confirmation on the spinoff and has chosen not to address its alleged cancellation.
