Lin-Manuel Miranda is heading back to Broadway with an all-new musical, ‘Warriors’.
Co-written with Eisa Davis, ‘Warriors’ will begin previews in March 2027 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and officially open in April, according to Deadline.
‘Warriors’ is based on the 1979 Walter Hill film ‘The Warriors’, which was inspired by a 1965 novel of the same name written by Sol Yurick.
It follows the eponymous street gang as they fight their way from the Bronx to Coney Island after being framed for the murder of the city’s famed gang leader.
What we know so far
Davis and Miranda first released ‘Warriors’ as a concept album in 2024, featuring Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Marc Anthony, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Colman Domingo, Cam’ron, Kim Dracula, and more.
Casting for the Broadway production is yet to be announced.
However, one thing has been confirmed: the Warriors gang will be all female, a twist from the original all-boys club.
Unlike Miranda’s biggest Broadway hit, ‘Hamilton’, ‘Warriors’ will have a book instead of being a sung-through musical.
Miranda, who played Alexander Hamilton in the award-winning musical, will not be among the ‘Warriors’ cast.
The new musical will be directed by Jenny Koons and co-directed by Andy Blankenbuehler, who will also choreograph for the production.
Exploring what ‘true peace’ looks like
In a New York Times interview released on June 23, Miranda said one of the reasons why he wanted to dramatize ‘The Warriors’ was because the 1979 film showed every New Yorker’s “primal fears” onscreen.
“Fear of being pursued by the police, fear of getting caught in the wrong neighborhood at night, fear of falling in the train tracks, fear of scary gangs with face paint,” said Miranda.
“And then when Eisa saw the movie, she said, ‘I’m really interested in the notion of peace.’”
“And what I’m proud of, on the other side of two years of writing together, is that the baby looks like both of us: It explores those fears and also explores the notion of, what does true peace look like.”
Davis, meanwhile, recalled one line on the album and musical: “What do you do when they kill everything you believe in?”
“I think that that question is a question that all of us are wrestling with in the world right now,” said Davis.
Outside of ‘Warriors’, Miranda is currently directing a film adaptation of ‘Octet’, a musical by David Malloy, starring a stacked cast including Rachel Zegler and Amanda Seyfried.
