If you think you’re over with Donkey’s quirkiness, this next project will make you sing “Don’t stop ’til you get enough”.
Your favourite charming sidekick is becoming the heart of his own story after over two decades of stealing screentime with hilarious puns, waffles, and unwavering loyalty.
Donkey’s story begins in Far Far Away
Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation confirmed to have officially whipped up a stand-alone spin-off based on the beloved character Donkey – played by American actor and comedian Eddie Murphy from the “Shrek” franchise.
“Donkey” is scheduled to hit the theatres on June 30, 2028, bringing another laughable chapter to one of Hollywood’s long-standing animated universes.
A similar report from Deadline cited that prior to the announcement, Murphy already hinted at the possibility of a spin-off during the promotional tour for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F”, when he shared that DreamWorks had been piecing together a story centred on Donkey’s life as a husband of a majestic dragon and a father to half-dragon, half-donkey children – a sight that only exists in this world.
Fans are now looking forward to the project’s deeper depiction of this rare dynamic, as well as the broader exploration of Donkey’s origin and the journey that transformed him into an unforgettable sidekick.

DreamWorks expands its fairy tale empire
Several creatives known for bringing to the big screen some hit animations will be behind this film.
Charlie Bean, renowned for works like “The Lego Ninjago Movie” and Disney’s live-action “Lady and the Tramp”, will be directing this spin-off together with Matt Flynn, whose credits include “The Wild Robot” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”.
They will be joined by Rebecca Huntley, who will be in charge of the production.
The announcement signifies the fans’ undying hype for the “Shrek” franchise.
With “Shrek 5” ready to elevate the heat in summer 2027, DreamWorks appears to be taking advantage of the solid and refreshed audience anticipation for the fairy-tale universe.
The planned spinoff also garnered support based on the success of “Puss in Boots” and its sequel, which alone have made about $1 billion worldwide.
This added to the “Shrek” franchise’s projected $4 billion box office haul.
“Shrek” has become a cultural icon, from its historic 2001 Academy Award win to its popular stage adaptations, theme park attractions, and top-selling global merchandise.
DreamWorks is now betting that Donkey, one of the most adored supporting characters in animation, is prepared to lead his own successful journey.
