DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has commented on the disappointing opening weekend that “Supergirl” suffered at the domestic box office during its debut weekend.
“Supergirl”, the DC film starring Milly Alcock as Superman’s cousin, experienced an underwhelming opening weekend at the domestic box office, earning only $38 million according to studio estimates released on Sunday, June 28.
Disappointing numbers
The result was disappointing given that the film had been expected to debut closer to $50 million domestically, despite the projected earnings already representing a decline from the $125 million opening of “Superman” in 2025.
“Superman”, which introduced David Corenset as Clark Kent and was directed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, performed well in theaters and grossed more than $600 million worldwide.
“Supergirl” centers on Alcock’s title hero and her efforts to save her poisoned dog, Krypto, while teaming up with a young girl who is seeking revenge against a villain who killed her parents.
David Corenswet also returns briefly as Superman.
“While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in,” Safran explained.
Worldwide, the DCU film earned only $68 million.
According to Rotten Tomato critics, DC cannot be feeling great right now.
The newly-rebooted DC Universe kicked off last year with “Superman”, which did well enough, but hardly earned the impressive numbers associated with Marvel or even certain films in the DCEU, like “Aquaman” or “Wonder Woman”.
For example, “Man of Steel” made over $668 million worldwide back in 2013.

Opportunity for DC Studios’ redemption?
DC Studios does, however, have an opportunity to salvage its reboot with “Clayface” – a horror film about the Batman villain – set for release in October this year.
Following this is the release of “Man of Tomorrow” in July 2027, the sequel to “Superman” that sees the return of Corenswet as Clark Kent alongside Alcock, reprising her role of Supergirl.
According to critics, it will be a major test of whether “Supergirl” disappointing in theaters was a temporary stumble or whether DC could be in trouble.
