The traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) has gone ahead with the consecration of four new bishops without a papal mandate, cementing a major rift with the Vatican.

The ordinations took place on July 1, at the society’s international seminary in Econe, Switzerland, directly violating explicit directives from the Holy See.

Defiance of the Holy See

Despite these explicit warnings, the traditionalist group chose to move forward with the ceremony.

The SSPX leadership, led by Father Davide Pagliarani, justified the move by citing a “state of necessity” within the modern Church.

They maintained that the preservation of traditional Catholic doctrine and the Latin mass required the secure continuation of their own episcopate.

By executing these ordinations without the necessary papal approval, the society directly defied the authority of Pope Leo XIV.

Looming threat of formal schism

The structural ramifications for the global Catholic Church are severe.

The Holy See views the unauthorised consecration of bishops as a deeply grave canonical offence.

Under Catholic Canon Law, ordaining a bishop without a mandate from the Pope triggers automatic excommunication (latae sententiae) for both the consecrating prelates and the newly ordained bishops.

Vatican authorities have reiterated that this act constitutes a schismatic step.

It mirrors the 1988 crisis when the society’s founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, similarly consecrated four bishops against the orders of Pope John Paul II.

This latest development threatens to permanently isolate the SSPX from mainstream global Catholicism, as both sides face a deeply entrenched theological and jurisdictional impasse.

Pope Leo makes a final plea

The unauthorised ceremony occurred despite direct, high-level diplomatic intervention from the Vatican.

Pope Leo XIV made a poignant, final personal appeal to the leadership of the SSPX just days prior.

He urged them to halt the impending episcopal consecrations to preserve ecclesial communion.

The pontiff warned that proceeding with the ordinations would severely damage the unity of the Church and undo decades of delicate theological discussions.

The Pope’s final warning made it clear that proceeding without a papal mandate would be interpreted by Rome as an explicit, formal schismatic act.

Pre-consecration letter signals break

This defiance was structurally framed exactly one week earlier.

On June 24, the SSPX issued a preceding open letter and an exhaustive 28-page declaration of faith to the Vatican.

In the letter, the society outlined a firm manifesto rejecting major modern reforms of the Second Vatican Council, such as ecumenism and synodality.

The group made it clear that they viewed the preservation of pre-conciliar traditions as an urgent necessity that superseded contemporary papal directives.

This effectively sets the theological stage for their independent ordinations.
