A regional travel fair in the southern Philippines has turned its focus outward, presenting journeys to some of the world’s most remote and lesser-visited regions while reinforcing the role of local tourism in a global marketplace.
The 16th Davao Mega Travel Sale, staged at Ayala Malls Abreeza, gathered 40 exhibitors offering a mix of domestic and international packages.
Among the most notable were tours to the Antarctic Peninsula and several Central Asian nations, destinations that remain outside the mainstream for many travellers in Southeast Asia.
Organisers used the event to spotlight discounted packages to countries often grouped as the “Stans”: Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.
The inclusion of these destinations signals a shift in marketing strategies, as travel operators increasingly promote experiences beyond traditional tourist routes.
Department of Tourism-Davao Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan said the event was designed to extend beyond commercial transactions.
“We say that diversity is our beauty here in the Davao Region, and today, that beauty expands to the rest of the world,” she said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency.

Growing appetite for expedition-style travel
The presence of Antarctic Peninsula packages also points to a growing appetite for expedition-style travel, which typically appeals to niche markets seeking remote and environmentally distinct experiences.
Local officials also emphasised the economic implications of such initiatives.
Myrna Ortiz, a city councillor representing Davao’s third district and chair of the Committee on Tourism, credited the Davao Travel Agencies Association for organising the event.
She said activities of this scale contribute to economic activity, from job creation to increased business opportunities.
At the same time, officials continue to frame such developments within a narrative of regional identity and economic growth.
By linking local tourism promotion with global travel opportunities, the Davao Mega Travel Sale illustrates how regional hubs are adapting to a more interconnected and competitive tourism landscape.
