While his music hiatus is still going strong, alternative R&B sensation Frank Ocean has been teasing fans about his directorial debut in collaboration with production company A24, starring Rye Lane’s David Jonsson.
Latest project updates
Last year, rumours began swirling that Frank Ocean was directing an independent film project and we later learned that shooting had begun in Mexico City, though the project’s title, plot and additional cast details remain under wraps.
While fans of Ocean have not heard any new full-length music projects from the singer since his hit album blonde was released in 2016, he has since been involved in a few creative endeavours.
These range from launching his own jewellery brand ‘Homer’ in 2021, to more recently directing films.
It was then officially announced that David Jonsson will star as the lead role of Ocean’s upcoming film.
However, in true Frank Ocean style, other information related to the project remained undisclosed.
Jonsson is fast becoming one of the most exciting British actors, known for his roles in Rye Lane (2023) and Alien: Romulus (2024).

Fans still await new music
While fans are eager to witness the 37-year-old’s latest creative endeavour, some continue to express bitterness about Ocean’s long-standing absence from music.
One fan remarked, “this man will do anything except record a new album”.
But a Frank Ocean film could be the next best thing to a Frank Ocean album.
Interestingly, however, Pharell Williams confirmed in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that the Thinking ‘Bout You hitmaker is still making music.
“Frank stays in the kitchen,” Pharrell shared. “And that’s probably the reason why he doesn’t serve as much. He really enjoys the culinary process.”
Meanwhile, the independent film’s production is underway with the aim of a potential premiere set between late 2025 to early 2026.
