‘Abbott Elementary’ creator and star Quinta Brunson is set to bring one of animation’s most enduring icons back to the big screen, developing and starring as Betty Boop in a new feature film.
The project marks the first theatrical starring appearance for the character in nearly a century and will explore her origins and cultural evolution.
Betty Boop through Max Fleischer’s eyes
The film is being developed by Brunson through her production company, Fifth Chance Productions, in partnership with Fleischer Studios and Mark Fleischer, grandson of Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer.
The project is currently in development and is being overseen by Fifth Chance’s head of creative affairs, Erin Wehrenberg.
The story will focus on the relationship between creator Max Fleischer and his creation, tracing Betty Boop’s transformation from early animation experiment to global cultural figure.
It will also examine how creative ambition intersects with commercial pressure as the character takes on a life of her own.

Embodying Betty Boop’s essence
In a statement, Brunson, who will also play Betty Boop in the film, described the character as “one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow still remains pleasantly niche”.
“She has had a quiet but undeniable impact on culture for nearly a century,” she said.
“After Erin and I met with Mark and learned more about his grandfather’s creation of Betty, I realised there was a much deeper story to tell.
“One that could be explored in a way that feels refreshing, subversive and timeless, much like Betty herself.”
Mark Fleischer said he was “breathtaken” by Brunson’s concept, adding that she embodies Betty’s “love of life, intelligence, humor, sassiness and compassion”.
The project arrives as Brunson continues her success with ABC’s hit comedy ‘Abbott Elementary’, where she has broken multiple Emmy records as creator, writer and lead actress.
Cultural legacy and modern reinvention
Created in 1930, Betty Boop first appeared in Fleischer Studios’ ‘Talkartoons’ series and went on to feature in more than 100 shorts, evolving into a Jazz Age pop culture figure.
She later became the first animated character profiled on A&E’s ‘Biography’ and recently appeared in the Broadway production Boop! The Musical.
The character also remains a major global licensing brand spanning fashion, beauty and collectibles, reinforcing her continued commercial relevance.
Like ‘Barbie’
Industry observers note the Betty Boop film could follow a modern reinterpretation trend similar to recent female-led reimaginings of classic characters like the widely popular 2022 film ‘Barbie’.
Fifth Chance Productions said the film aligns with its mission to develop character-driven projects highlighting diverse voices and universal storytelling.
