South Korean action horror film Colony has emerged as the biggest cinematic success story of the year in Malaysia, earning over MYR30.6 million in ticket sales since its premiere on May 22.
Local distributor Mega Films Distribution confirmed the milestone this week, noting that the thriller has maintained strong attendance even in its sixth week of screening across major Malaysian cinema chains including GSC, TGV, MBO, and Lotus Five Star nationwide.
Two key distinctions
Colony is now Malaysia’s highest‑grossing film of 2026, and it has overtaken director Yeon Sang Ho’s earlier blockbuster “Train To Busan,” which held the record for seven years with MYR21 million.
The new thriller currently holds the title as the most successful South Korean production ever released in the country.
Diverse viewers and strategic release plan
Distributors reported that family audiences, thriller fans, and long‑time followers of Korean cinema have all contributed to the sustained box‑office momentum.
Malaysia was selected as the first Southeast Asian market to launch Colony.
Simultaneously, the release aligned exactly with its debut in South Korea, a move aimed at curbing piracy and meeting high pre‑release demand.
In its home market, the film opened at number one and quickly crossed 5.2 million admissions, ranking among the top five highest‑earning titles there this year.

Helmed by Yeon Sang Ho, known for redefining the outbreak‑thriller genre, the story follows a diverse group of office workers and residents trapped inside a high‑rise building when a mysterious, airborne infection begins spreading rapidly.
