Kenyans back nationwide protests over soaring fuel prices

Kenya fuel protests

On Monday, thousands of Kenyans expressed support for nationwide protests that saw demonstrators light bonfires and block major roads across several cities in response to the sharp rise in fuel prices and the growing cost of living.

The demonstrations, largely driven by public transport operators and grassroots activists, brought Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and other urban centers to a standstill as burning tires and barricades disrupted traffic during a coordinated transport strike.

Protesters said the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices had made transportation and basic commodities unaffordable for ordinary citizens.

Public service vehicle operators, boda boda riders and truck drivers joined the strike, insisting that operating costs had become unsustainable following the latest fuel price review.

Protests not just about transportation

“This action is not only for transport operators, but for every Kenyan citizen. The ordinary mwananchi is the ultimate victim of high fuel prices, paying more for transport, food, electricity, and essential commodities,” Transport Sector Alliance (TSA) told The Star.

In Wote Town, Makueni County, angry demonstrators reportedly attacked offices belonging to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), damaging property during confrontations linked to the protests.

Local leaders condemned the destruction but acknowledged growing public anger over the worsening economic situation.

However, many netizens openly backed the action, arguing that the protests reflected widespread frustration among struggling households.

“Good job. It’s supposed to be like that countrywide,” Ben KM commented on NTV Kenya’s Facebook page about demonstrators torching UDA headquarters in Wote Town, Mukeni.

“Thank you very much. Good news. People are tired,” Peter Tush added.

Government accused of failing citizens

The nationwide action follows a coordinated strike announcement by transport sector associations, which accused the government of failing to cushion citizens from rising fuel and commodity prices.

TSA said that the demonstrations were intended to pressure authorities into reversing recent fuel price increases and implementing broader economic reforms.

Business activity across several cities slowed significantly as commuters struggled to access public transport. Some schools opted for virtual learning due to safety concerns and fears of further unrest.

Meanwhile, government officials urged for calmness and called on protesters to remain peaceful while discussions continue on possible measures to address the economic pressures facing citizens.
