The domestic box office in Vietnam increased significantly in 2025, with local films dominating.

According to cinema chain CJ CGV Vietnam, total box office revenue in 2025 amounted to nearly VND5.6 trillion ($213 million), with more than 70 million tickets sold, up 24% and 26%, respectively, from 2024.

Local films accounted for 62% of the market share.

In 2025, 50 local titles were released, generating an average revenue of VND69 billion ($2.63 million), compared to 41 films and VND18 billion (VND684,800) in 2024.

Rise of local films

At the recent 2026 CGV Partnership Conference in Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Hoang Hai, chief content officer of CJ CGV Vietnam, said that the market saw an increase in top-tier local films in 2025.

He said that nine titles earned between VND100 billion ($3.8 million) and VND300 billion ($11.4 million), and two garnered over VND300 billion.

Top-grossing local films included “Mua Do” (“Red Rain”), a war epic based on the 81-day struggle to protect the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel in 1972, which brought in VND700 billion ($26.6 million).

The comedy “Bo Tu Bao Thu” (“The Four Rascals”) raked in VND332.1 billion ($12.6 million).

Along with popular genres, Hai said that historical films have become the top options for moviegoers due to the growth of national pride, professional investment and excellent quality.

According to Jeong Jiyoung, general director of CJ CGV Vietnam, Vietnam’s film industry has continued to flourish thanks to the rise in domestic film content and quality.

She expressed her hope that the partnership conference would grow into a major yearly event that would show CGV’s dedication to supporting local film studios, producers, and directors in creating a professional and sustainable film ecosystem in the Southeast Asian country.
