Ruben Amorim admits Manchester United’s position in the Premier League table is ‘unacceptable’, but says he has a ‘clear feeling’ of how to improve their form.

United head into Friday evening’s clash with Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge sitting down in 16th place in the table, having only won 10 of 36 league games so far this season.

The Red Devils’ league woes have been matched by Tottenham, who also face a tricky away clash on Friday night, taking on sixth-placed Aston Villa at Villa Park.

United are only one point better off than Spurs, who have won 11 games but lost 20 in the league – and the two struggling teams face each other in the Europa League final on May 21.

Hot property

Amorim was hot property when he was ushered in to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford – but the Portuguese manager has seen his stock drop dramatically after winning just six of 26 games in charge of United.

“I am embarrassed that in 26 games, we have won six. Something is wrong with the way we are playing football,” Amorim told Sky Sports.

“Sometimes it is not about the way we play tactically, it is the way we face competition and suffer. When we get mad about losing.

“Everything we have been through, I have a clear picture and a clear feeling of what this team needs to be so much better.

“It is not just on the pitch, it is outside the pitch. We have all the conditions to be better.”

Europa League hope

United have now gone seven games with a win in the league, with their European form providing a glimmer of hope for fans that they may end the season with some silverware.

Amorim’s case has not been helped by Arne Slot’s seamless transition into the Anfield hot-seat, where he replaced Jurgen Klopp last summer and then led Liverpool to Premier League title glory with plenty of room to spare.

The spotlight is firmly on Amorim with United having matched their longest winless streak in the Premier League – and arguably set for more capital punishment against Maresca’s Londoners.

Unacceptable position

He added:  “Our position is unacceptable. That is not a lack of confidence, it is a lack of something more profound.

“There are some things we cannot change in summer, the feeling in the club and the way we see it.

“The feeling that we cannot lose a match. We have to change that and not think about transfers. That is more profound than changing people. We are doing that but people cannot see that.

“The way we work and the behaviour we have in the club. The things we cannot see, we are working on. We need to forget about the final and need to be better against Chelsea.”
