Team Europe clinched a stunning and historic away victory at Bethpage Black, holding off a fierce United States comeback to win the Ryder Cup 15-13.

Despite the Americans’ valiant charge during the Sunday singles, Europe’s dominance across the first four sessions proved decisive.

Luke Donald’s squad had stormed into a commanding 11.5-4.5 lead heading into the final day.

A twist came early on Sunday when Viktor Hovland withdrew with a neck injury, triggering the “envelope agreement” and awarding his match as a tie in favour of Europe.

Team USA fall short

But the Americans weren’t done. They rattled off five wins and one tie across the first seven singles to shift momentum.

Cameron Young claimed a dramatic final-hole birdie to beat Justin Rose, and Justin Thomas sealed a 1-up win over Tommy Fleetwood to remain perfect in Ryder Cup singles.

Xander Schauffele continued the fight, defeating Jon Rahm 4&3, and Bryson DeChambeau clawed back a half-point after an impressive recovery.

Europe struck back through Ludvig Aberg, who beat Patrick Cantlay 2&1, and Shane Lowry, whose birdie on the final green secured a half-point against Russell Henley, locking in retention of the trophy.

Reaction from both camps

“I was nervous but I felt like this is where I belong,” said Lowry. “It’s something that I’ll remember forever.”

Tyrrell Hatton’s tie with Collin Morikawa pushed Europe to the 14.5 needed for victory, while Bob MacIntyre added late insurance by halving against Sam Burns.

Donald admitted it was an emotional rollercoaster. “It has been the most stressful 12 hours of my life,” he confessed, extending praise to his players and opponents alike.

Keegan Bradley, US captain, gifted respect to the Europeans: “They looked like they were battling…They were fighting the whole way, even when things were not looking good.”
