Hulu has officially renewed The Testaments for season 2, confirming that the dystopian sequel series to The Handmaid’s Tale will continue following its breakout first season and growing global audience.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name, The Testaments premiered in April 2026 and quickly became one of Hulu and Disney+’s most talked-about drama releases.

The series continues the story of Gilead years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, focusing on a younger generation raised within the regime’s oppressive system.

Why Hulu renewed The Testaments so quickly

The renewal announcement came ahead of the season 1 finale, signalling strong confidence in the show’s future.

According to Hulu, the series has generated more than 45 million streaming hours globally across Hulu and Disney+ since its debut.

Episode viewership has also reportedly grown week by week, with audiences continuing to build throughout the season.

The show has also performed well critically.

The Testaments currently holds strong review scores and has been praised for successfully expanding the world of The Handmaid’s Tale while introducing a new cast of central characters.

The series was developed by longtime Handmaid’s Tale creator Bruce Miller, who stepped away from showrunning duties on the original series to focus on adapting Atwood’s sequel for television.

What season two of The Testaments could explore

While Hulu has not released an official synopsis for season two, the next chapter is expected to continue following Agnes and Daisy as they begin questioning the realities of life in Gilead.

Season one focused heavily on the pair navigating Aunt Lydia’s elite school for future wives, where obedience and religious control dominate everyday life.

Executive producer Warren Littlefield has previously suggested the creative team envisioned the adaptation spanning multiple seasons, with season 1 acting more as a foundation for the larger story still to come.

The series has also continued to tie itself closely to The Handmaid’s Tale, including appearances from Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne.

Which cast members are expected to return

Although full casting for season two has not yet been officially confirmed, several major stars are expected to reprise their roles.

This includes Chase Infiniti as Agnes, Lucy Halliday as Daisy, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia and Rowan Blanchard as Shunammite.

There is also speculation that additional Handmaid’s Tale characters could return in future episodes as the worlds of both series continue to overlap.

When The Testaments season 2 could be released

Hulu has not announced a release date for the second season yet, and filming has reportedly not started.

However, several reports suggest the new season could arrive sometime in 2027 if production begins later this year.

With strong streaming numbers, an established fanbase and more of Margaret Atwood’s story still left to tell, The Testaments appears set to remain a major part of Hulu’s dystopian television slate for years to come.
