Formula One has reignited its enduring bond with Malaysia as the Sepang International Circuit stepped in to rescue a key fixture on the 2026 calendar.
The venue will host the Bahrain Grand Prix over the weekend of October 2 through 4.
This arrangement follows the cancellation of the original Middle Eastern slot due to ongoing regional conflict and instability.
“Formula 1 and the FIA can confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit from October 2-4 2026,” F1 and motorsport’s world governing body said in a statement, as cited by AFP.
Track design, layout and racing dynamics
The track located near Kuala Lumpur International Airport stands as a masterpiece of modern engineering and a crowd favourite.
It spans up to 22 metres wide in key areas, giving drivers multiple racing lines to attempt side-by-side passes.
Designed by Hermann Tilke, the 5.543-kilometre circuit blends high-speed straights with sweeping, high-load S-bends that test a car’s aerodynamic balance.
Two long 900-metre parallel straights end in tight hairpins, creating heavy braking zones where cars can realistically fight for position.
The Sepang International Circuit last featured in the F1 championship in 2017 yet continues to operate successfully as a premier MotoGP venue.

F1 leadership reacts
F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali welcomed the venue’s return, asserting that Malaysia is an incredible country and Sepang holds a special place in Formula 1 history.
“It will provide a spectacular setting for racing and an unforgettable experience for fans at the circuit and watching around the world” he expressed.
“This is fantastic news for our fans. They will continue to enjoy a full and exciting Formula 1 calendar while also seeing the sport return to a great venue.”
Logistical planning is streamlined as the Bahrain organising committee assumes responsibility for a substantial portion of the operational and relocation costs.
Updated calendar structure
The championship calendar now counts 23 confirmed events.
The Sepang race sits neatly between Azerbaijan on September 26 and Singapore on October 11.
Meanwhile, caution remains regarding the season’s final leg as Qatar and Abu Dhabi hang in the balance.
According to Domenicali, options range from back-to-back contests in Las Vegas to European replacements at Imola or Portimao.
He said officials will not rule until late September or early October.
