The 20th Asian Games officially commenced in Japan on September 19, marking the country’s return as host for the first time since 1994.
Jointly hosted by Nagoya City and Aichi Prefecture, the grand sporting event will run through October 4. This tournament represents Japan’s third time staging the continental games.
46 nations represented
According to Nation Thailand, this year’s games bring together over 11,000 elite athletes and 6,000 team officials representing 46 nations and territories across the continent.
Competitors will challenge for top honors across 469 gold medal events in 43 distinct sports.
Beyond continental victory, key competitions such as hockey, squash, and surfing double as official qualification pathways for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, the Inquirer reported.

Spectacular opening ceremony: “Imagine One Asia”
The opening ceremony at Paloma Mizuho Stadium delivered a spectacular celebration of culture, unity, and modern technology.
Guided by the official slogan “Imagine One Asia,” the spectacle featured traditional music performances alongside cutting-edge 3D projection mapping.
Aside from this, it emphasized environmental stewardship.
Moreover, organizers made history by lighting the main stadium cauldron using clean hydrogen fuel, establishing a key sustainability milestone for future international sporting events.
Over the upcoming two weeks, international audiences will witness top-tier athletic excellence and cross-cultural friendship.
