Gaming news: Nostalgia lives on in Game Boy Advance remake

The Game Boy Advance has been remade with higher resolution and more powerful specs.

Chinese gaming hardware maker Ayaneo has unveiled the Konkr Pocket Advance, a retro-inspired handheld that closely resembles Nintendo’s iconic game system while packing modern features aimed at today’s emulation crowd. 

Revealed through Ayaneo’s KONKR sub-brand, the device revives the horizontal design that defined a generation of portable gaming and updates it with Android-powered internals, USB-C connectivity, and wireless support.

Back to 2001

At first glance, the Konkr Pocket Advance looks like it could have come straight out of the early 2000s.

The handheld features a 3.5-inch LCD display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, matching the original Game Boy Advance’s screen shape.

However, the resolution has been upgraded to 960 x 640, allowing for sharper visuals and improved scaling for classic games.

Even with this upgraded display, Ayaneo assured that the pixel-art of games past wouldn’t be distorted because the screen supports 4x point-to-point scaling.

The company is also launching the handheld in two nostalgic colorways: Navy Blue, inspired by the original Indigo Game Boy Advance, and Coral Orange, a nod to Nintendo’s fan-favorite Spice Orange model.

Old-school looks, modern-day features

Unlike Nintendo’s handheld, the Konkr Pocket Advance isn’t designed for cartridges.

The Android-based device relies on software emulation and works with Ayaneo’s AYASpace platform for managing game libraries.

Players will find familiar controls such as the D-pad and ABXY buttons, but Ayaneo has also added modern conveniences including L2 and R2 triggers, a microSD card slot, USB-C fast charging, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and even a 3.5mm headphone jack. 

A physical volume wheel completes the retro aesthetic.

Nostalgia never goes out of style

The Konkr Pocket Advance arrives as retro gaming continues to enjoy a massive resurgence.

Ayaneo is just one of the companies that recreate classic handhelds, alongside Retroid and Anbernic.

Many players are revisiting childhood favorites, while younger gamers are discovering older titles for the first time.

The success of these devices suggests that nostalgia alone is no longer the selling point.

For many gamers, retro hardware offers a different experience from today’s blockbuster releases: simpler controls, shorter play sessions, and a direct connection to gaming history.

Ayaneo has not yet announced pricing or a release date for the Konkr Pocket Advance.

Still, the reveal has already attracted attention from handheld enthusiasts eager for another modern take on one of gaming’s most beloved devices.
