Film news: ‘Dunesday’ – A sci-fi film duel for the ages

Dunesday

December 2026 will feature the biggest cinematic showdown of the year as two colossal franchises prepare to battle it out at the box office.

The intensifying hype between ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’ promises an exciting cultural phenomenon that will captivate the imagination of movie fans, not only in North America, but all over the globe.

The clash of titans arrives at the end of a remarkable blockbuster-filled year.

Marvel Studios is likely preparing for another billion-dollar blockbuster hit as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ continues becoming the most anticipated film of the year.

Fans of the superhero movie genre, particularly those loyal to the Marvel comics on which the franchise is based, are excited to see the return of the Avengers, six years after ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man, and other Marvel superheroes will appear in the fifth Avengers game, this time against a galactic threat posed by the super-villain Doctor Doom.

As if this is not enough to get moviegoers’ adrenaline pumping high, Warner Bros. has opted to premiere Dune: Part Three also on December 18 in an exciting blockbuster clash.

The third installment of the popular Dune franchise will cover the aftermath of the war started by Paul Atreides and his Fremen army following his victory over Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV in the previous film.

Sci-fi junkies have coined this upcoming cinematic doubleheader as “Dunesday”, further proof of the growing hype for the two films.

The Barbenheimer formula

The media hype surrounding the two films and their shared release date is reminiscent of a similar situation in recent cinema history.

Memes and other related content spread like wildfire online when it was announced that Warner Bros. Pictures would pit the fantasy comedy film ‘Barbie’ against Universal Pictures’ autobiographical movie ‘Oppenheimer’ on July 21, 2023.

Directed by Greta Gerwig, ‘Barbie’ was based on the popular fashion doll of the same name.

Meanwhile, the Christopher Nolan-directed ‘Oppenheimer’ was highly marketable because it is about the life of Robert Oppenheimer, the man behind the creation of the atomic bomb in the Second World War.

The principle of cinema counterprogramming worked in great effect for the two films, as their contrasting style, theme, and overall motif resonated among moviegoers.

Barbie raked in $1.4 billion worldwide, with ‘Oppenheimer’ not far behind at $975 million, for a total of $2.4 billion, far outweighing their combined budget of $245 million.

While ‘Barbie’ slightly surpassed ‘Oppenheimer’ in earnings, the autobiographical film came out the biggest winner at the Oscars after bagging Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy as Robert Oppenheimer), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr. as Levi Strauss), and Best Director.

A sci-fi phenomenon

While pitting ‘Doomsday’ against ‘Dune’ cannot be categorized as counterprogramming since they are of the same genre, this may be their biggest strength in theatres.

The fans of both franchises overlap, allowing their moviegoers the flexibility to move from one film to another without having sci-fi fatigue since they tell completely different stories.

Unlike Barbenheimer, ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Dune’ come from proven franchises.

The Avengers franchise boasted total earnings of $7 billion across four movies, with ‘Endgame’ being the highest-grossing superhero film of all time at $2.90 billion.

‘Dune’, on the other hand, has also crossed the $1-billion mark, after ‘Dune: Part Two’ grossed $574 million at the box office.
