For years, fans fancast Dave Bautista as Kratos. Now it’s actually happening.
Amazon Prime Video has officially cast Bautista as Kratos in its live-action adaptation of “God of War,” replacing actor Ryan Hurst, who exited the role following a serious on-set injury.
The casting ends weeks of speculation after reports surfaced that Amazon and Sony were searching for a new lead following Hurst’s torn bicep injury, which required surgery and would have significantly delayed production.
The Ghost of Sparta gets a new face
Hurst had originally been announced as Kratos in January 2026 and had already filmed scenes for the series before suffering the injury during stunt work. Rather than wait for his recovery, Amazon and Sony opted to recast the role so production could continue.
With Bautista now officially signed on to pick up the Leviathan Axe, filming is expected to resume in Vancouver in the coming weeks.
However, the change means scenes previously filmed with Hurst will need to be reshot.
A fan-favorite choice
The casting will likely be welcomed by many fans of the game. Long before Amazon’s adaptation entered production, Bautista frequently appeared in fan casting discussions thanks to his imposing physique, shaved head, and experience portraying larger-than-life characters.
Best known as Drax in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, Bautista has steadily built a reputation as a dramatic actor through projects such as “Dune,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Glass Onion,” and “Knock at the Cabin.”

Entering the Norse saga
The series is expected to adapt the story introduced in 2018’s critically acclaimed “God of War,” which shifted the franchise from Greek mythology to Norse mythology.
Rather than focusing on Kratos’ earlier years as a vengeful warrior, the show will explore his relationship with his son Atreus, played by Callum Vinson.
The story follows their journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye, while confronting gods and monsters from Norse mythology.
The cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Max Parker as Heimdall.
Amazon’s next big gaming bet
Amazon has already committed to two seasons, with plans to film them back-to-back.
The series is being led by writer and showrunner Ronald D. Moore, known for “Battlestar Galactica,” “For All Mankind,” and “Outlander.”
The project also arrives at a time when video game adaptations are enjoying unprecedented success, following the breakout performances of shows such as “The Last of Us,” “Fallout,” and “Arcane.”
For Amazon, the challenge is clear: turn one of PlayStation’s most beloved franchises into its next prestige television hit.
