World leaders assembled at the United Nations headquarters in New York on September 22 for the opening of the general debate of the 81st UN General Assembly, as countries confronted escalating global crises, diplomatic rifts and complex geopolitical conflicts.
Diplomatic tension marks opening addresses
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva delivered the traditional opening address by a national leader, using the international platform to emphasise national sovereignty and warn against foreign interference in domestic affairs and electoral processes.
His address was followed by speeches from other major world leaders, including United States President Donald Trump, as the gathering brought differing positions on international trade, climate commitments, global governance and ongoing conflicts to the forefront.
The high-level gathering brings together heads of state and government, as well as other senior representatives from the United Nations’ 193 member states. The general debate is scheduled to continue through September 26 and September 28.
Key issues on the Assembly’s agenda include ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, global economic instability, climate change and the governance of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres opened the session with a warning that global divisions are deepening, while calling for greater international cooperation on climate action, economic fairness, AI safeguards, human rights and accountability. He also called for reforms to global governance institutions, including the UN Security Council.

Security concerns, diplomatic manoeuvring
Diplomatic activity has also continued on the sidelines of the General Assembly, with governments holding bilateral and multilateral meetings alongside the formal sessions.
Middle Eastern security remains a prominent focus, with delegations addressing heightened regional tensions and conflicts involving Gaza and other parts of the region. The opening day also saw several leaders place the Middle East at the centre of their addresses.
The General Assembly’s high-level week has also brought heightened security measures around the UN headquarters in Manhattan as large numbers of world leaders, diplomats and officials gather in New York.
Over the coming days, delegates are expected to participate in further high-level meetings and discussions addressing international security, economic resilience, sustainable development, humanitarian issues, climate-related challenges and other global concerns.
