Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo to gun for gold in men’s floor exercise final at Asian Games

The Philippines will turn to Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo once more in a bid to open its gold medal account in the men’s floor exercise final on Thursday at the Nagoya City General Gymnasium during the 20th Asian Games.

The double Olympic gold medallist will join his brother Eldrew in the individual apparatus finals as the Philippines looks to secure a top podium finish in gymnastics at the quadrennial tournament.

The men’s floor exercise could be the 26-year-old’s best opportunity to win a gold medal after he topped the qualification with a score of 14.266 points on Wednesday.

Philippines finish sixth in men’s team all-around

Despite Carlos’ strong individual performance, the Philippines finished sixth in the men’s team all-around final after recording a total of 227.359 points.

China topped the standings with 255.095 points, followed by Japan with 253.826 and Chinese Taipei with 239.896. Kazakhstan finished fourth with 237.596, while Korea placed fifth with 236.359.

Carlos was the Philippines’ top performer in the floor exercise, scoring 14.266 points, while Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto was his closest competitor with 14.000.

Eldrew, meanwhile, scored 13.000, followed by Justine Ace de Leon with 10.933.

The Philippine squad also recorded 38.099 points in rings, 42.365 in vault, 36.099 in parallel bars and 35.632 in pommel horse.

The bid for gold is still alive

While the men’s team all-around competition has concluded, the Philippines still has opportunities to win gold in the individual apparatus finals, with the Yulo brothers leading the charge.

Aside from the men’s floor exercise final, Carlos also qualified for the vault and parallel bars finals.

Juancho Besana will join Carlos in the vault final.

Eldrew, meanwhile, will compete in the horizontal bar final as he bids for what would be his first Asian Games medal.
