Thousands of motorcycle taxi riders flooded the streets of Jakarta as the Indonesian capital mourned the death of a delivery rider killed in a police vehicle crash.

The 21-year-old victim – identified as Affan Kurniawan – worked for local ride-hailing app Gojek, with the incident happening during a demonstration that turned violent on Thursday.

Protests were held over several issues, including the massive allowances for lawmakers.

The Jakarta Post reported that Kurniawan was allegedly run over by a police tactical vehicle while he was trying to deliver food in the area.

It was further revealed that the victim was rushed to Jakarta’s Mangunkusumo Hospital but did not survive his injuries.

An additional victim – identified as Moh Umar Amarudin – apparently suffered a broken leg and is being treated at Pelni Hospital in the capital.

Police chief’s apology

National police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo apologised on Friday, assuring the public that the police will conduct a thorough investigation with the seven officers involved in the incident.

“We offer our deepest apologies to the victim, his family, and the wider online motorcycle taxi driver community,” Prabowo told reporters, as quoted by CNA International.

“I deeply regret what happened,” he added while at the hospital where Kurniawan was admitted.

Jakarta police chief Asep Edi Suheri also expressed regret and promised accountability, emphasising taking legal action against those responsible.

Seven officers from the Jakarta Metro Jaya Regional Police Mobile Brigade have since been held by the national police’s Professional and Security Division.
