BBC Radio 1 has announced that this year’s Big Weekend festival will take place in the North West city of Liverpool.
The music event will be taking over the city’s Sefton Park from Friday 23rd May till Sunday 25th May 2025.
It’s the first time the event has been staged in the city, though Liverpool is no stranger to making musical history.
Geordie superstar Sam Fender was announced as the weekend’s headliner, with fellow northern band Blossoms making an appearance too.
Myles Smith, Wet Leg, and Lola Young are also set to perform.
Fender took to social media to share his excitement with fans, saying: “Excited to announce we’re coming to Liverpool for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in May. Thanks for inviting us – see you there!”
Around 100 acts will take to the stage, from huge artists to new and emerging artists, performing across four stages: Radio 1 Main Stage, Radio 1 New Music Stage, Radio 1 Dance and BBC Introducing.
Over 100,00 music fans are expected to attend.
Music city
The news delighted ‘Scouse’ music fans in a city that’s famed for its musical history and influence and many took to social media to declare their excitement.
“Brilliant news for a brilliant city,” declared one Instagram fan.
Sefton Park is used to hosting large events, including the Liverpool International Music Festival, and Fender has previously played there in 2019.
The BBC is reported to be working closely with Liverpool City Council to ensure that the festival is a safe and secure environment.
It will also play an important part in Liverpool’s UN Accelerator City programme – a new initiative that sees the city trial innovative ways to decarbonise the live music and TV/film industry.
Ticket details have yet to be announced but previous years have seen the event sell out within minutes, with the majority of tickets reserved for local residents.
Live coverage will be available on BBC Radio 1.
