The Democratic Party claimed a sweeping victory on Election Day (November 4) in a record voter turnout for the New York City mayoral race, with Zohran Mamdani emerging triumphant over independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican Party nominee Curtis Sliwa.

A Democratic night

Both New Jersey and Virginia will again be firmly in Democratic control as Mikie Sherill and Abigail Spanberger win their gubernatorial bids in these states, respectively.

Sherill, whose campaign centered on economic issues like living costs and healthcare, was ahead by 13 points after capturing 56.3 percent of the votes over Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli (43.2 percent), with 94 percent of votes counted.

Sherill lambasted President Donald Trump’s policies in her victory speech, stating that New Jersey “will never be ruled by kings”.

In Virginia, Spanberger emerged as the first-ever elected woman governor of the state, garnering 57.2 percent of the votes to defeat her Republican rival, Winsome Earle-Sears, who amassed 42.6 percent of the electoral support.

In 2021, Glenn Youngkin stunned the Democrats after flipping the gubernatorial seat from Terry McAuliffe, which allowed the GOP to control the state legislature of this traditionally blue state.

Spanberger gave a nod to incumbent Lieutenant Governor Earle-Sears during her speech, as the 46-year-old vows to work for all of her constituents.

“I also know those who were supporting my opponent are disappointed today and for those Virginians who did not vote for me … my goal and intent is to serve all Virginians,” she said.

Additionally, Democrat Jay Jones also defeated incumbent Jason Miyares to succeed the latter as the new Virginia Attorney General.

Jones was recently embroiled in a controversy after his leaked text messages revealed how he would “piss on graves” of Republicans, as well as having “fantasies” of shooting Republican Todd Gilbert.

Jones eventually apologised for the text messages but refused to drop out of the race despite pressure from the Republicans.

Mamdani’s meteoric rise

Perhaps the most followed after-election result of the night was Mamdani’s victory over Cuomo and Sliwa for the mayoralty race of New York.

Mamdani, who started his campaign with only 1 percent of support en route to winning the Democratic primary, carried 50.4 percent of the votes to Cuomo’s 42 percent.

Sliwa placed a distant third with 7.1 percent.

In his 20-minute address after he was proclaimed the winner, New York City’s soon-to-be first South Asian Muslim Mayor proudly declared to his cheering fans that they had “toppled a political dynasty.”

A day before the elections, President Donald Trump endorsed Cuomo as the latter was seen as Mamdani’s only true rival in the race.

“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice,” said Trump in his post on Truth Social.

Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo was aimed at chipping away at Mamdani’s lead in surveys, which previously showed that the 34-year-old would get 45.8 percent of the votes, against Cuomo’s 31.1 percent, according to the RealClearPolitics polls.

Officials say that two million New Yorkers cast their ballots this election, the highest voter turnout in the city since 1969.

California’s Prop 50

Meanwhile, 64.0 percent of the California electorate on Election Day voted yes to the implementation of  Proposition 50, pushed by state governor Gavin Newsom.

Also known as the “Election Rigging Response Act”, Prop 50 seeks to redraw the congressional map that will give the Democrats an additional five seats in Congress.

The move was largely seen as a response to the redistricting plans in Republican-led legislatures of Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, and Ohio.

The passing of the proposition is expected to boost Newsom as a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2028.
