In celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, extended editions of each instalment in Peter Jackson’s iconic trilogy will be returning to theatres for two weekends in January.

This was announced by Fathom Entertainment, a content distribution company, and Warner Bros. Pictures on Friday, giving fans ample time to prepare for the hours (and hours) of J. R. R. Tolkien’s masterpiece.

Lots of extra runtime

Jackson’s films are lengthy enough in standard form, but the extended editions take things to the next level.

For example, The Return of the King’s extended edition is almost four and a half hours long.

The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, on the other hand, both come in at a little under four hours each.

Where possible, special D-BOX presentations will be available during the first weekend, January 16-18, offering stunning audio and visuals to enhance the overall experience.

“The trilogy of films in The Lord of the Rings are remarkable cinematic accomplishments and made an indelible impact on fans with their stunning visuals, unparalleled storytelling, and epic performances from the cast – essentially raising the bar for what is possible on the big screen,” said Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, in a press release.

“As we celebrate the 25-year anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in 2026, Fathom is proud to join with Warner Bros. to present each of these incredible films, with the extended editions from Peter Jackson and in 4DX for the enjoyment of fans old and new.”

About Jackson’s famous trilogy

The epic six-film series directed by Jackson has been embraced by generations of fans and earned over $6 billion at the global box office alongside 17 Academy Awards, becoming the most-awarded film series in cinema history.

Set in Middle-earth, the narrative begins as hobbit Frodo Baggins embarks on a perilous mission – and an adventure like no other – to destroy the legendary One Ring.

In 2021, the Library of Congress selected The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Following the first film’s milestone 25th anniversary in 2026, a new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is set for release on December 17, 2027.
