Former U.S. President Barack Obama has once again delighted fans with his much-anticipated annual list of favourite music.

Released this December, his 2025 selections reflect his eclectic taste and strong appreciation for global artistry, independent voices and genre diversity.

A global soundtrack for 2025

Obama’s 2025 music picks span a variety of continents and cultures, featuring chart-topping hits and lesser-known gems.

The list includes global icons like Kendrick Lamar & SZA (‘Luther’), BLACKPINK (‘Jump’), and Rosalía (‘Sexo, Violencia y Llantas’) alongside emerging names such as Olivia Dean (‘Nice to Each Other’) and Laufey (‘Silver Lining’).

This year’s playlist also highlights Afrobeat crossovers with Burna Boy and Travis Scott’s collaboration ‘TATATA’ and international acts like Nigerian artist Olamidé and Colombian duo Xavi & Manuel Turizo.

Obama also shows a soft spot for introspective songwriting, as seen in selections like Jason Isbell’s ‘Bury Me’ and Kacy Hill’s ‘Please Don’t Cry’.

Notably, the 2025 list feels more exploratory, embracing rising alternative, queer and indie voices – such as Chappell Roan (‘The Giver’) and The Beths (‘Metal’) – alongside soulful collaborations like ‘Never Felt Better’ by Everything is Recorded featuring Sampha and Florence Welch.

Cultural influence beyond politics

Obama’s annual entertainment lists have become a hallmark of his post-presidential life, offering a window into his intellectual and cultural curiosities.

Beyond being long-awaited lists, they often boost visibility for emerging creators and artists, making inclusion on his list a potential career milestone.

As streaming platforms and global media evolve, Obama’s recommendations continue to reflect not just good taste but a nuanced understanding of the cultural zeitgeist.

For artists, making it onto Obama’s year-end radar is more than an honour; it’s a signal of global resonance and celebration.
