Pep Guardiola acknowledged Manchester City’s worsening form after a shock Champions League defeat to Norwegian minnows Bodø/Glimt on Tuesday, a result that left qualification for the last 16 dependent on a final group clash with Galatasaray.

A depleted City side was undone by two quickfire goals from Kasper Høgh and a Jens Petter Hauge strike, with Rayan Cherki scoring before captain Rodri’s dismissal capped a miserable night.

Erling Haaland later apologised to supporters, calling the performance “embarrassing”.

Guardiola laments poor result

“Everything has started to be, since the new year, against [us] in many, many things,” Guardiola told reporters at a post-match press conference.

“I know how good a team Bodø are – I didn’t underestimate them. There is not much I know, but they [reached the] semi-final last season of the Europa League and they were fresh in mind.

“We arrived in some departments without important players who give consistency to the team. They are a little bit fragile, [like] they were last season in a certain period, but how they fought 10 against 11, a lot of players made a step-up.

“We have to come back – the results since 2025 is not good, in terms of the Premier League and now today, but we have to look forward.

“We have four days for Wolves and after Galatasaray to try to see what happens. We have to change the dynamic quick.”

Haaland apologises to supporters

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Haaland admitted: “I don’t have the answers. I take full responsibility of not being able to score the goals I should do.

“I just apologise to everyone – every single Man City supporter and every single supporter that travelled today – because in the end, it’s embarrassing.

“Bodø, they played some incredible football and in the end, it’s deserved.

“Honestly, I don’t know what to say because I don’t have the answers, and what I can say is sorry.”

Man City’s worrying form

City’s strong end to 2025, which featured eight consecutive wins, has given way to a difficult start to 2026, with just two victories from their last seven matches.

A run of draws against Sunderland, Chelsea and Brighton stalled their league momentum, even though emphatic FA Cup and Carabao Cup wins briefly lifted spirits.

Defeats away to Manchester United and Bodø have since underlined their inconsistency across competitions.

It is an unwelcome trend for Guardiola’s already thin squad as they continue to compete on all four fronts.
