French President Emmanuel Macron’s speech to world leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos last week has gone viral online for two rather unexpected reasons: his hip blue sunglasses and use of the phrase “for sure”.
Demand for the navy-blue ‘Top Gun’-esque shades, which were striking against the blue background of the WEF, exploded.
“After Macron’s speech in Davos the website crashed due to the volume of orders,” said Stefano Fulchir, CEO of iVision Tech, the Milan-based company which owns Henry Jullien, the France-based firm which makes the glasses.
Henry Jullien said it had to create a dedicated webpage for the Pacific S 01, the model worn by Macron.
One pair will set you back 659 euros.
The parent company also saw its stock balloon by over 60%, giving it a $4 million boost.
The French president has been wearing sunglasses since January due to a burst blood vessel which is “totally benign,” according to his office.
‘For Sure’
After his speech at the WEF, the internet also clung on to two sentences said by Macron about Europe: “Sometimes it’s too slow, for sure. It needs to be reformed, for sure.”
The original clip has circulated around Instagram and TikTok, with ‘for sure’ now becoming a meme.
There are even musical remixes of Macron’s speech.
In his speech, the French leader warned of a “shift towards a world without rules” – Macron may well be hoping this sentiment can get through all the viral noise.
However, Macron was more likely trying to send a message to US President Donald Trump, who also attended Davos.
Trump has sent Europe scrambling for a response several times in the past two months, especially after capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a daring raid and then threatening to seize control of Greenland, a territory of Denmark.
Whether the American leader will eventually see eye-to-eye with Macron – sunglasses or not – remains unclear.
